The project was an early pioneer of the tiny-home movement. DJA created the concept of a sustainable cottage community located on the edge of the harbor town, Langley on Whidbey Island near Seattle. After a rigorous planning process, including rezoning the parcel, DJA designed a charming neighborhood consisting of 11-single-family, 1,000-square-foot cottages. The units were designed using a “kit of parts” concept to customize models for each individual owner’s preference. The efficient design proved that small pedestrian-owner units can be very functional, maximizing every square foot without sacrificing aesthetics or livability.
